Cambodia - Kingdom of Wonder:
Cambodia’s history includes periods of great prosperity and cultural achievement, especially during the Khmer Empire (9th–15th centuries). Centered at Angkor, it became one of Southeast Asia’s most advanced civilizations, known for its engineering, architecture, and spiritual art. The legacy of Angkor—seen in monuments like Angkor Wat—still shapes Cambodia today through national identity, cultural pride, tourism, and education. Its past continues to influence modern cultural life and development, showing how history remains a living force in society.
Cambodia’s education faces a “perfect storm” of challenges, shaped by a history that targeted educators and a largely agrarian economy. Despite expanding access and rebuilding school infrastructure since the early 2000s, learning outcomes remain low: the country ranked last of 81 in the 2022 PISA assessment, only 17% of 15-year-olds are in Grade 10, and northern provinces lag with 3.7 years of schooling in Siem Reap and 6.1 in Battambang, versus 8.7 in Phnom Penh. These outcomes reflect systemic issues—limited teacher preparation, low in-service support, and weak alignment between policy and classroom realities—while recent reforms, including a four-year B.Ed program for primary teachers, will take time to show impact.
Why Siem Reap?
Siem Reap, with its rich cultural and historical significance, embodies the transformative spirit of education and is a symbol of resilience and renewal. As the home of Angkor Wat, the world’s largest temple complex, it serves as a reminder of what humanity can achieve when creativity, skill and resilience come together collaboratively. Siem Reap, in northwest Cambodia, is also central to the success of the recent PIKT Project, making it the ideal location to share lessons learned and chart new paths forward.
EPIC Summit 2026 is 22-24 July in Siem Reap, Cambodia. You don’t want to miss it!
